For more of Ms. Smith…

These scenes are taken from the MGM film from 1944 Bathing Beauty.

Bonus: Update on the whereabouts of that Hammond. And, Ms. Smith herself. Look at that incredible signature!

  1. These are cool--thanks for posting, JB. Do you have recommendations of other organists? I have a couple Walter Wanderley records that I've downloaded, something a little difeerent would be neat, maybe.

From the bio you linked to:
"Her left hand was so limber that she did as much with her left hand as with her right."

I guess Ralph Bellamy didn't like her fast playing on his organ

  2. David, thanks for posting. (and for reading in the first place). I have to admit, I had to google Wanderley. Youtube quickly revealed he is responsible for that archetypical organ instrumental recording of Summer Samba. On further inspection of the links I found this. As someone with a love for the hammond, coupled with a phone fetish, it's gold. I would have swapped out the Colin Farel footage with Tippi Hendren in the phone booth of "The Birds", but, anyway, nice piece there.

All this should fully reveal the level of my ignorance of organ musicians. I love it, but I guess I get more into the organ when it crops up as a background player, with exception to Booker T and the MG's who I love, love, love. I do have a stack of old LP's that feature organ instrumentals, but I haven't really learned the names. Just grab them when I'm in the mood. I know I've got some Jimmy Smith, but I don't love that stuff. Too "jazzy". I favor the simple minded trajectory of "A Whiter Shade of Pale", or even the spooky Egyptianesque noodling of "Inna Gadda Da Vida". Wish those tracks existed with the vocals scrubbed.

    Thanks again.
